At the Royal Monastery of Brou in Bourg-en-Bresse, the Moulins Triptych, presented as a restored Renaissance masterpiece, can be seen until 3 January 2027. The exhibition gives Jean Hey’s work a setting that resonates with the period in which it was made.

Brou is more than a backdrop: it helps place the triptych within the artistic activity of the Bourbonnais at the end of the 15th century. For painters and draughtsmen, that matters because it brings into focus the links between patronage, workshop practice, and the visual language of a region.

Restoration also changes what the viewer can notice. With the surfaces clarified, the structure of the image, the relationship between the panels, and Jean Hey’s handling of figures and space become easier to read.

For lovers of painting, the interest lies in seeing how an old work shifts when it is shown in a historically charged place. The triptych is not presented as a detached masterpiece, but as a painted object in dialogue with an environment, a moment, and a craft.
