The Broad sends 164 works to Paris during its expansion
Los Angeles’s Broad museum will loan 164 works to the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris for its largest exhibition ever mounted outside the city. At the same time, the museum is expanding at home and building a new partnership in Leimert Park.

“The Broad Collection — Los Angeles in Paris” opens on April 21 and runs through August 30, 2026. It will occupy nearly the entire Fondation Louis Vuitton, in Frank Gehry’s building, while the museum in downtown Los Angeles moves through what Joanne Heyler called some of the most intense final stages of construction.
For artists and viewers who care about painting and drawing, the show is interesting because it changes the frame around the collection. Seen in Paris, works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Barbara Kruger, Julie Mehretu, Andy Warhol and Kara Walker can be read through architecture, spacing and light in a different way than they are at home.
The loan also brings newer Los Angeles voices into view, including Sayre Gomez, Lauren Halsey, Patrick Martinez and Laura Owens. Their inclusion places the city’s current art scene alongside the museum’s better-known holdings, making the exhibition feel less like a greatest-hits survey than a living cross-section of the collection.
Back in Los Angeles, the Broad will remain open during construction, though its third floor is expected to close later next year. The museum also plans to open a new gallery space later this year, converted from storage, so the collection can keep circulating both at home and abroad before returning for the expansion’s opening in 2028.
