Jean Dupas in Bordeaux, a retrospective drawn from French collections
The Musée des beaux-arts de Bordeaux is devoting its first retrospective to Jean Dupas, on view until 29 November 2026. Built entirely from French collections, the exhibition brings back into view a body of work that has remained largely out of sight.

In Bordeaux, the Musée des beaux-arts is presenting Jean Dupas & Co. Le grand Art déco, an exhibition devoted to the painter and decorator Jean Dupas (1882-1964). By drawing exclusively on French collections, the museum has gathered a dispersed body of work without relying on loans from abroad.
That curatorial constraint is more than a practical choice: it also shows how an artist’s presence is shaped by museums and collections. For artists and for readers interested in painting and drawing, the value of the show lies in the way it brings a little-seen artistic heritage back into public view and lets visitors trace Dupas’s work through pieces preserved in France.
Within the Musée des beaux-arts setting, the retrospective encourages a closer look at Dupas beyond the Art Deco label, through drawing, composition and decorative craft. It also reminds us that an exhibition can be a way of studying how works circulate, remain hidden, and re-enter view.
