Boston museum opens a live view onto Dutch painting conservation

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston will let visitors watch the restoration of Nicolaes Eliasz Pickenoy’s The Founders of the Amsterdam Wine Merchants Guild, painted in 1625. Starting December 9, the work will be visible in a temporary studio inside the Center for Netherlandish Art.

Acquired last year, the group portrait shows the six founding members of Amsterdam’s wine merchants’ guild, a wealthy organization that lasted until the late 18th century. That makes the painting a window onto civic identity, trade, and the way portraiture recorded status in the Dutch Golden Age.

Rather than waiting for the finished result, museumgoers will be able to follow a year of conservation as it unfolds. Conservators, scientists, art historians, and curators will rotate through the Innovation Gallery, turning the restoration process itself into part of the museum visit.

For artists and anyone interested in painting or drawing, the appeal lies in what conservation reveals about looking closely: surface condition, material decisions, and the work needed to keep an image legible. Watching a restoration in real time also shows how an old painting is still handled as an active object of study, where technique and interpretation meet.
