Bilbao museum unveils its extension plan
The Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts has presented Agravitas, an extension designed by Norman Foster and Luis Maria Uriarte. The project will significantly expand the museum and reshape how its collections are displayed.

Unveiled on 6 October 2026, the scheme is part of a broader transformation of the museum. Beyond adding space, it aims to rethink visitor flow and the way works are brought into conversation with one another.
For artists and for people who care about painting and drawing, that matters because a museum is also a reading device. The way rooms are linked, how sequences are built, and how periods are placed side by side can change how we notice gesture, scale and surface.
The Foster and Uriarte project is a reminder that architecture shapes the eye as much as the collection itself. In a larger museum, light, distance and sightlines can make a painting, sketchbook or group of drawings read differently, opening more room for comparison and close looking.
