At the Grand Palais, Cézanne meets the artists he shaped

The Grand Palais brings together nearly 200 works around Paul Cézanne and the artists who have drawn on him from the late 19th century to the present. The exhibition Cézanne and Us runs in Paris until 17 January 2027.

Rather than simply underline Cézanne’s place in art history, the exhibition places his paintings alongside works by artists who took up his questions of form, space and construction. The result shows how one artist’s way of looking can lead to very different solutions across more than a century.

For painters and draughtsmen, the interest lies in Cézanne’s method of seeing. His work shows how to build a picture plane, hold sensation and structure together, and make things feel present without freezing them into a final image.

The dialogue with later artists also makes clear how his approach kept shaping modern and contemporary painting: a landscape, still life or figure can be taken up again and pushed toward another logic of construction. What emerges is less a model to copy than a set of pictorial problems that remain alive.

By gathering these works at the Grand Palais, the exhibition invites visitors to see Cézanne not as a fixed reference point but as an artist whose compositional choices and brushwork still resonate in current practice. That shift from influence to invention gives the project its interest.
