At Lyon’s fine arts museum, artists turn collections into art
The Musée des beaux-arts de Lyon is hosting “Musée sentimental,” an exhibition devoted to artist-collectors. Their works bring together objects from art and everyday life, chosen for their use as much as for their presence.

The show highlights artists who have built deeply personal assemblages of objects, mixing new and worn pieces, ordinary things and precious ones. These are less displays of rarity than intimate landscapes, where accumulation becomes a way of thinking about the world and holding on to it.
For artists and for anyone drawn to painting or drawing, the appeal lies in this collector’s gaze: to sort, pair, and preserve is already to compose. The objects gathered in “Musée sentimental” reveal choices of material, shape, and value, and show how an artwork can grow out of a sensitive act of inventory.
The exhibition’s title points to another way of approaching art, through attachment, memory, and affinity rather than through the idea of a masterpiece alone. In Lyon, these inspired cluttered worlds invite close looking at what artists keep around them, and at what those things say about their craft.
