A lost Old Master painting is found after poster campaign
A 17th-century painting by Willem Cornelisz Duyster, Un Buveur, has been recovered after disappearing during World War II. The Musée d’Orléans used a “wanted” poster campaign to help bring the work back into view.

According to ARTnews, published on November 3, 2026, the recovery centers on an old painting that vanished during the war and was later traced again. The Musée d’Orléans played a key role by turning the search into a public visual campaign.
For artists and painting lovers, the story matters on two levels. It reminds us that a painting is not only a collectible object, but also an image whose movement, memory, and loss are part of its history.
It also shows how effective a plain, legible presentation can be: the artist’s name, the title, the work’s status, and an image clear enough to be recognized. That kind of campaign depends on the viewer’s eye as much as on museum expertise, making visibility itself part of the work of recovery.
