A Long-Hidden Georgia O’Keeffe Painting Turns Up at Home
A Georgia O’Keeffe painting known only from a 1931 photograph has resurfaced in a family house. It had been hidden behind fur coats for nearly forty years.

Artnet reports that Near Abiquiu was found while a woman known as Betsy was helping her late aunt prepare for hospice. The painting had been tucked behind a row of fur coats in the closet of the aunt, a former Foreign Service worker.
When a work survives first as an image and only later as an actual object, it changes the way artists and viewers understand it. For painters and draftspeople, that shift is especially telling: the photograph preserves a record, but the recovered canvas restores scale, surface, and the physical decisions of making.
This kind of rediscovery is interesting because it brings a work back into circulation through domestic history as much as through art history. The painting’s return is not just a news item; it is a reminder that looking closely often depends on what has been stored away, mislabeled, or simply overlooked.
